When it comes to preparing for the theoretical exams, I highly recommend starting with EASA Private Pilot Studies by Phil Croucher. It is a more condensed version of what you need to know and provides you an excellent foundation. I really found it brilliant in how he webs and connects the various topics together.
Next, you can decide whether to go with the 7-Series AFL books by John Pratt or the Pooleys Air Pilot’s Manual 7-volume books/eBooks bundle. The AFL books are definitely easier to follow for the novice, as they contain less text and has illustrations which really helps. Pooleys, on the other hand, goes into greater depth and I went through it as a final step.
If you would like to test your knowledge, do use the revision guide sets from AFL or/ and Pooleys. They are really excellent tools that helps you prepare for the exams, as it consolidates the knowledge acquired and helps you identify any areas of weakness. You can also attempt the online mock tests from Bristol and Aviationexam.
With the above, you should be all set to excel!
