In this post and the following posts, I will share how I approached the world of aviation. If you are new to the world of aviation, you are certain to feel overwhelmed as to where and how to get started. The right approach to gaining the knowledge will make all the difference in how enjoyable the journey can be towards that end goal.
From my personal experience, the most difficult thing that aspiring pilots face is figuring out how to get started and what are the steps to be taken to obtain the necessary licenses. Even with AI tools and online resources, there is really no real clarity, because not only does every flight school have its own structure, but every country also has its own regulations and licensing standards.
The very first step is to make sure you are comfortable with Physics and Mathematics. Understanding the fundamentals helps you get a strong understanding of the theory. Especially focus on the fundamentals of topics that are directly relevant to aviation. In my next posts, I’ll share topics that you need to have a good understanding of and some of the most highly recommended books plus resources that I use.
Now, when it comes to actually starting your journey into aviation, I was advised to begin with sailplanes, otherwise known as gliders. Why start here?
I was advised to start my journey with sailplanes as it is an unpowered flight. That it is the best place to start as sailplanes rely entirely on the natural forces of the atmosphere, which is basically lift, drag, and gravity. I recognized that I started to develop an intuitive understanding of how an aircraft behaves in different conditions. I learnt to “feel” the air and to anticipate changes. I was told that these skills form the foundation of excellent airmanship. And the really good bit is that with sailplanes you can start at a younger age. Also, it is more affordable than powered flight training. You can gain valuable flight experience and confidence in the cockpit. Many professional pilots are known to have started their aviation journey in gliders for these very reasons.
When I was looking for the best sailplane flight school online, I discovered the iconic Wasserkuppe which is known as the birthplace of gliding. I remember feeling so excited. I decided that it was there I would commence my learning, as it holds a legendary place in aviation history. Afterall, it was here that pioneers of flight first experimented with motorless aircraft. It was such an incredible feeling to be part of something so historic.
I loved the flight school and the whole feel of the city. I was told the location is ideal for gliding, as it has consistent updrafts. The awesome community of experienced instructors just made it even more perfect. Also, this location was so much more, as it was about connecting with the spirit of aviation itself.
I'm certain you will love this glider school!
